Good Soil — Leader Quick Start

For whoever is running a session: a Sunday school teacher, a small-group leader, a parent trying it with their own kids. Read time: about five minutes. Pair this with safety-privacy-onepager.md before your first session, and see parent-letter.md if you want to send something home first.

This is a P0 asset named in the church adoption kit (FAITHFARM_RETENTION_DISTRIBUTION_REVIEW_2026-07-22.md §2). Some of what that kit calls for — a full multi-page session guide, an offline no-screen activity sheet, a facilitator/timer mode — is not built yet. This document says so plainly wherever that's true, rather than implying it.

What Good Soil is

A gentle, free, browser-based farming game with a Christian heart. Kids and families plant a field, tend it, and help their neighbors, and along the way a verse or a short teaching moment shows up — never as a condition for playing, never as a reward you have to earn. It's a general-audience game, not marketed to a specific age group; younger children can play the entire thing without ever being asked for anything (see the safety one-pager for why that phrasing matters).

What you need

  • One device per student is easiest. No shared-device mode has been built or tested — if several kids share one device, you're managing turn-taking yourself, the game has no help for it.
  • A browser. Nothing to install ahead of time for the game itself. If a device has already been used to open the game once with "Add to Home Screen," it will keep working without Wi-Fi after that — but that has to happen before your session, not during a Wi-Fi outage.
  • A few minutes beforehand to pick what you're sending kids to find (next section).

How a session actually runs

  1. Before the session, browse `/curriculum`. It's an answer key indexed by location — for each item you see the question, the answer (visible only to you, never to students), and exactly where in the game a student has to go, written as a plain walking route like "The Ancient Paths → The Promise → Chamber 1: The Call of Abram."
  2. Check availability before you pick anything. Some content is fixed in the world and can be found on purpose, any day. Some is not — it rotates daily, shows up at random, or is locked until a player has progressed further. The curriculum marks each item clearly. Stick to the "always findable" items unless you deliberately want the gamble of something that might not be there when your class needs it.
  3. Build a worksheet at `/curriculum/worksheet`. Pick your items and it lays out student-facing questions with the walking directions for each one — never the answer. Print it, or just read the list aloud.
  4. Hand it to your group. Students open the game — their own device, or a shared one — and go find the answers by walking to the places named.
  5. Proof is a screenshot, taken on the student's own device, shown to you however your classroom already handles that (held up, texted, AirDropped — whatever you already do). Nothing is uploaded or submitted through the game itself. That's not a missing feature: it's why this activity can run without collecting anything about your students. See the safety one-pager.
  6. Check answers yourself, from the same page you built the worksheet from — you're the only one who saw the answer key.
  7. Discuss and close using your own notes. There is no packaged discussion-questions-and-closing script yet. A full session guide (the next P0 asset in the adoption kit) is meant to cover this; until it exists, bring your own framing questions, or lean on the teachingLine and reflection text the curriculum already shows you for each item.

What doesn't exist yet — worth saying to yourself before you promise it to anyone

  • No session timer or facilitator mode. You decide when to start and when to stop; nothing in the game paces this for you.
  • No shared-device mode, built or tested.
  • No offline, no-screen-at-all activity sheet. If both Wi-Fi and devices fail mid-session, there's currently no paper fallback for this curriculum. (A device that already has the game installed to its home screen keeps working without Wi-Fi — that's a real, separate fact about the game itself, and not the same thing as a paper backup for a session with no working device at all.)
  • No leader training video yet.
  • No age recommendation beyond the account rule. Don't advertise this as being "for" a specific age group — see the safety one-pager for why.

If something goes wrong mid-session

  • Wi-Fi drops after the game already loaded on a device: keep going — a device that had the game open once mostly keeps working. If a device never loaded it before the outage, there's no fallback yet (see above).
  • A student can't find an item: you have the exact walking route on your worksheet page — read it to them, or walk over and point.
  • Something a student sees raises a safety or privacy question: see safety-privacy-onepager.md, and reach us at hello@churchwiseai.com.
